Challenge

To come up with a concept for a magazine. To create a custom word mark for the magazine. To create a magazine cover that aligns with the chosen concept. To add textual elements that adress what the magazine issue is about.

Solution

As the magazine’s main topic is sex, a typically taboo topic of discussion, it boldly features the word “taboo” on its cover to initiate conversations on traditionally sensitive topics. The striking wordmark, with a bold sans-serif font and a closed-open eye symbol, conveys the mission to bring attention to overlooked matters. The colour palette of red, black, and white, particularly the attention-grabbing red, aims to draw readers in, challenging societal norms around taboo subjects. The first edition of the magazine is named “Ripping Off the Wrapper” showcasing a cover image where a woman is opening a condom wrapper. This serves as a metaphor, similar to peeling off a band-aid or revealing a sensitive topic. The imagery symbolizes the magazine’s bold approach to addressing taboo subjects and fostering open conversations about sex.
